Jr. Elgin L. Hushbeck What Is Wrong with Social Justice

What could possibly be wrong with social justice? We like justice. We are social beings. Should not our communities be just ones? Author Elgin Hushbeck, Jr. maintains that social justice is not justice. When we pursue social justice, it is at the expense of true justice and in its pursuit of equality, social justice threatens liberty. It is a case of setting contradictory and incompatible goals. Hushbeck examines our current pursuit of social justice and how it has failed, while looking also at the scriptures we use in that pursuit and how we have misunderstood them. While we should care about our neighbors and find ways to ease the plight of the poor, social justice's emphasis on redistribution is not only often unjust but it actually makes things worse. His prescription? Pursue justice and liberty without any adjectives.

Stephen Crane Maggie: A Girl of the Streets

Originally published pseudonymously in 1893, “Maggie: A Girl of the Streets” follows the tragic tale of Maggie and her life in the harsh streets and tenements of the New York City Bowery district. Initially rejected by publishers for being viewed as too brutal and accurate in its descriptions of poverty and female sexuality, Stephen Crane published the work at his own expense. Following the success of Crane’s novel “The Red Badge of Courage,” this novel was reissued in 1896 with extensive re-writes and edits. Generally considered to be the first work of American Naturalism, Crane combines exhaustive research and an attention to detail to create an accurate depiction of life for the working poor at the turn of the century in the slums of New York City. Maggie’s judgmental and violent family, the harsh working conditions she faces in factories, her unstable relationships with men, and her eventual destitution on the streets, are used to explore the important and pressing issues of the time. In Maggie’s struggle to find love, acceptance, and economic security, Crane creates a portrait which mirrors the struggle of all the women of America at the end of the nineteenth-century. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Arlin M. Adams A Nation Dedicated to Religious Liberty

Here is a concise overview of the historical development and judicial interpretation of the First Amendment religion clauses. It begins with a survey of the history of American religious liberty, goes on to present the views of the Founding Fathers, and then considers the core value of religious liberty and the constitutional purposes that implement that value. the book ends on a practical note by applying these principles to questions of equal access, religious symbolism in public life, and the task of defining religion for constitutional purposes. As the authors note in their introduction, «the historical principles that animate the religion clauses are more than an abstract intellectual exercise. . . . They provide an essential context for guiding the resolution of modern religious liberty issues.»

Filippo Falcone Milton’s Inward Liberty

What is true liberty? Milton labors to provide an answer, and his answer becomes the ruling principle behind both prose works and poetry. The scholarly community has largely read liberty in Milton retrospectively through the spectacles of liberalism. In so doing, it has failed to emphasize that the Christian paradigm of liberty speaks of an inward microcosm, a place of freedom whose precincts are defined by man's fellowship with God. All other forms of freedom relate to the outer world, be they freedom to choose the good, absence of external constraint and oppression, or freedom of alternatives. None of these is true liberty, but they are pursued by Milton in concert with true liberty. Milton's Inward Liberty attempts to address the bearing of true liberty in Milton's work through the magnifying glass of seventeenth-century theology.

A. W. Tozer The Pursuit of God

American Christian Pastor A. W. Tozer hailed from the Midwest where as a teenager he overheard a street preacher say, “If you don't know how to be saved … just call on God, saying, ‘Lord, be merciful to me a sinner.’” It was in this moment that he converted to Christianity and began his own pursuit of a more pious life. Of Tozer’s “The Pursuit of God” Samuel M. Zwemer remarks in his introduction that it “is the result of long meditation and much prayer. It is not a collection of sermons. It does not deal with the pulpit and the pew but with the soul athirst for God. The chapters could be summarized in Moses’ prayer, ‘Show me thy glory,’ or Paul’s exclamation, ‘O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!’ It is theology not of the head but of the heart. … Here is a book for every pastor, missionary, and devout Christian. It deals with the deep things of God and the riches of His grace. Above all, it has the keynote of sincerity and humility.” Arguably Tozer’s most popular work “The Pursuit of God” will be an insightful read for every Christian who ventures down its path in pursuit of God.

Leon Kass Life Liberty & the Defense of Dignity

At the onset of Life, Liberty and the Defense of Dignity, Leon Kass gives us a status report on where we stand today: “Human nature itself lies on the operating table, ready for alteration, for eugenic and psychic ‘enhancement,’ for wholesale redesign. In leading laboratories, academic and industrial, new creators are confidently amassing their powers and quietly honing their skills. For anyone who cares about preserving our humanity, the time has come for paying attention.” Trained as a medical doctor and biochemist, Dr. Kass has become one of our most provocative thinkers on bioethical issues. In Life, Liberty and the Defense of Dignity, he has written a book that grapples with the moral meaning of the new biomedical technologies now threatening to take us back to the future envisioned by Aldous Huxley in Brave New World. In a series of mediations on cloning, embryo research, the sale of organs, and the assault on mortality itself, Kass questions the wisdom of trying to break down the natural boundaries given us and to remake the human body into an instrument of our will. He also attempts to chart a course by which we might avoid the dehumanization of biotechnical “recreationism” without rejecting modern science or rejecting its genuine contributions to human welfare. Leon Kass writes profoundly about the limits of science and the limits of life, about what makes us human and gives us human dignity. Life, Liberty and the Defense of Dignity.

Shirley Robin Letwin The Pursuit of Certainty

By examining the thought of four seminal thinkers, Shirley Robin Letwin in The Pursuit of Certainty provides a brilliant record of the gradual change in the English-speaking peoples’ understanding of “what sort of activity politics is.” As Letwin writes, “the distinctive political issue since the eighteenth century has been whether government should do more or less.” Nor, as many historians argue, did this issue arise because of the Industrial Revolution or “new social conditions [that] aggravated the problem of poverty” but, Letwin believes, because of the “profoundly personal reflection” of major thinkers, including Hume, Bentham, Mill, and Webb. David Hume, for example, believed that to “reach for perfection, to seek an ideal, is noble, but dangerous, and is therefore an activity that individuals or voluntary groups may pursue, but governments certainly should not.”By the end of the nineteenth century, as Letwin observes, Beatrice Webb came to “equate the triumph of reason over passion with the rule of science over human life.” Thus did the “pursuit of certainty” displace the traditional English understanding of the limitations of human nature—hence the necessity of limits to governmental power and programs. Consequently, in our time, “Politics was no longer one of several human activities and at that not a very noble one; it encompassed all of human life” in quest of philosophical “certainty” and social perfection. The Liberty Fund edition is a reprint of the original work published by Oxford in 1965.Shirley Robin Letwin (1924–1993) was a Professor of Political and Legal Philosophy at Harvard, Cambridge, and the London School of Economics. Please note: This title is available as an ebook for purchase on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and iTunes.

Dagmar (Van Der Meer) Howe Whatever Happened to Dagmar?

This is the journey of a young European immigrant who was living the American dream—life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—until she found herself a prisoner of the social injustice of domestic abuse with a partner who had succumbed to the illness of alcoholism. Wanting to become an artist and a writer, the struggle to regain the freedom of her childhood for herself and her children could have been anyone’s story, because these social issues exist in America today and threaten the liberty of our families and of our goals.
This is the story of love, loyalty, friendship, fears, toil, and tears. A story of setbacks, discouragements, and challenges common to mankind. Without faith in the God of the Bible who brought the Israelites out of bondage, Dagmar may have remained captive in an unacceptable situation that was stealing away the God-given liberty of freedom of choice.

Crane Stephen Maggie. A Girl of the Streets and Other Stories

With a new Introduction by Cedric Watts, M.A., Ph.D., Research Professor of English, Sussex University. During his tragically short life, Stephen Crane gained fame as a vividly distinctive writer. His stories of evolving American society are unflinchingly realistic and shrewdly ironic. Maggie: A Girl of the Streets tells of Maggie's seduction and downfall into prostitution amid the harsh world of the Bronx, where life is a battlefield. The other tales offer a diversity of insights into social hypocrisy, child psychology, and the wild violence of the frontiersmen. Such violence is ruthlessly depicted in 'The Blue Hotel'. This collection of stories is replete with lively dialogue, ominous atmospheres, dry humour and graphic incidents. Praised by Joseph Conrad and Ernest Hemingway, Stephen Crane's memorable tales have become enduringly influential.

Джон Стюарт Милль On Liberty and Other Essays

This volume, containing Mill's «On Liberty», «Utilitarianism», «Considerations of Representative Government», and «The Subjection of Women», draws together the basic ideas of liberalism that, although radical in their time, have gained recognition as comprehensive and relevant fundamentals of government, economics, and logic. Since the publication of «On Liberty» in 1859, no other nineteenth century philosopher has delved so deeply into the implications of independence from the state and what it means to be truly free. The four works contained here are accessible texts that clearly delineate Mill's philosophies, the most remarkable of which are the basis for liberty as the sovereignty of man over his own body and mind, Mill's famous «Harm Principle,» true and false democratic government, and equality of the sexes.
